Except for two staff, the domestic appliances department in Selfridge’s was deserted. After a few moments inattention, Anderson waved his arm at them. The young man who sauntered across was polite, but not hopeful of completing an early morning sale. At their smartest, neither Anderson nor Martin looked to be men of wealth or distinction. The events of the past twelve hours had not improved their appearances.

When the salesman asked if he could be of assistance, Anderson held out the gold credit card for him to inspect. After a quick glance, he was immediately more attentive.

‘Yes, Mr. Kaynskov. How can I help you?’

‘I want to buy a fridge-freezer. One with a lot of space.’

‘Certainly, Sir.’ The salesman led them to the appropriate section and waved his hand at the units on display. ‘There you are Sir. Our complete range.’

Anderson walked straight to the model that was identical to the fridge in the penthouse kitchen. ‘This is the one. I’ll take it.’

The salesman was pleasantly surprised by the speed of the sale, but still felt obliged to comment.

‘It’s top of the range, Sir. Over eight hundred pounds.’

Anderson handed him the card. ‘Charge it to my account.’

‘Certainly, Sir.’

With more respect and alacrity than he’d shown minutes before, the salesman led them to his desk to complete the paperwork. Anderson glanced at Martin with a smug expression. ‘We’ve also bought some items in your DIY department. When you deliver the freezer you can send them with it.’

‘I’ll see to it, Sir.’

Anderson was all jokey as the salesman filled in his form. ‘We don’t want to inconvenience Selfridges with separate deliveries.’

‘That’s very considerate of you, Sir.’ He looked up from the forms. ‘And the address where the items are to be delivered?’

Anderson took a visiting card from Kaynskov’s wallet and gave it to him. The salesman wrote down the details.

‘And when would it be convenient to deliver, morning or afternoon? It would be helpful to our despatch department.’

‘Later today. Say between two and three.’

The salesman glanced up from his paperwork. His reaction was still respectful, but his voice full of genuine regret. ‘I’m afraid that’s quite impossible, Sir.’

Anderson frowned and his voice was sharp.

‘What do you mean impossible!? I’ve an appointment at the British Foreign Office. As Ambassador of my country I must be there by four o’clock. Later will be too late.’

At mention of the Foreign Office and diplomatic rank the salesman was seriously embarrassed. ‘What I meant, Mr. Ambassador, is that the model you’ve chosen isn’t available ex-stock. It will be three or possibly four days before we can deliver.’

Anderson looked furious and pointed across to the freezer. ‘What do you mean, three or four days? It’s standing there right in front of me!’

‘That’s for demonstration purposes only. We will have a brand new one delivered to you.’

Anderson became agitated, conscious of Martin’s warning that things could go wrong. He felt in his wallet and took out a fifty-pound note. He held it in front of the salesman’s face. ‘This afternoon! Between two o’clock and four! I don’t care if it’s not a hundred percent brand-new.
